Live for the Aesthetics
“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you are wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art — write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.” — Neil Gaiman.
One thing about me is that I love aesthetics. I will do something simply for the beauty of it. Like take an iced latte in the middle of July when it’s freezing cold (I would not recommend this guys). If you ask me, there is some fulfillment to be found in living for the aesthetics, however miniscule. You get to observe the beauty around you, when otherwise you wouldn’t have. Like the way the rain trickles on the side of the window during your morning commute, or the way the moon shines on a particularly clear night. I especially love looking at the moon and I think it’s sort of an unspoken intimacy to go moon-gazing with a friend or a lover.
Sometimes we tend to close ourselves off to our inner child. We have become too caught up in careers and success and looking like we got our shit together, and all the while our inner child is telling us to just have some fun. As you’ve probably heard a million times, “It’s not that serious”. And that’s what living for the aesthetics is all about. Whatever I am doing right now may not be beneficial monetary or otherwise…
